Open Access is an initiative –led by the academic and research community– for free, immediate and permanent online access to digital scientific content. With an aim to promoting the free exchange of scientific information and the open exploitation of research results for the benefit of society, the National Documentation Centre (EKT) has been in the forefront to support open access movement and the free availability of scientific publications in the country. It was the first Greek organization to sign the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities in 2003, and since then, has continued to support all open access Initiatives.

Open access policies lead initiatives at NISRT. Τhe National Documentation Centre (EKT):
Aggregates and disseminates a significant volume of peer reviewed and quality assured scientific content
Adopts open source software to build digital infrastructures for the distribution of information in science and culture
Builds and develops open access e repositories
Creates an environment for e-publishing of electronic open access journals
Maintains and updates a portal dedicated to Open Access (www.openacces.gr).
Contributes to the wider discussion on issues related to Open Access in Greece and promotes open dialogue through Open Access Blog.
Organizes conferences, events and targeted information campaigns to increase awareness of the benefits of Open Access across the country’s academic, research community and the wider public.
