Bibliometrics

The National Documentation Center carried out and published the study 'Greek scientific publications 1993-2008 : a bibliometric analysis of Greek publications in international scientific journals’  which aims to identify the basic characteristics of Greek scientific output during the period 1993-2008 and to explore Greece’s position in the international scientific landscape.

Data for Greek scientific publications in international journals was analyzed systematically for bibliometric indicators such as the number and (%) share of publications, the percent of cited papers, the number and (%) share of citations, the relative citation impact, the field normalised citation score (citation score) and the number and pencentile breakdown of top publications belonging to the most cited publications in the world (1%, 5%, 10%, 25% and 50%). The indicators revealed information and measures on research institutions’ scientific output (both per category of institutions and individual institutions), publications’ distribution by field of science, the degree of national and international collaboration etc

Data was drawn from the National Science Indicators [NSI] and the National Citation Report Greece [NCR-Greece] databases of Thomson Reuters. EKT, not only has followed a distinct methodological approach and validation techniques but also developed the software required for the process of data analysis.

Since the study has defined trends and tendencies in research activity in Greece, it serves as a point of reference for research institutions, universities and policy makers. More than 7.500 readers have visited the webpage that hosts the studies (www.ekt.gr/metrics). The study’s print version is available in the bookshop of National Hellenic Research Institute (Basileos Konstantinou 48, Athens).
