New services in the Cloud for digital content providers

13/03/2013

The National Information System for Research and Technology (NISRT) constitutes a national electronic research infrastructure (e-infrastructure) and is run by the National Documentation Center (Ethniko Kentro Tekmiriosis-EKT). NISRT has the following mission:

  • to support scholarly communication
  • to promote research and innovation
  • to develop, manage and optimise the use of digital content
  • to offer open access to the results of scientific research
  • to enhance the re-use of scientific and cultural content
  • to realise national and international collaborations in order to achieve long term preservation of the digital content and interoperability between systems and data

Moving away from offering standalone services to individual users, EKT’s strategic goal is to develop NISRT as a national platform at the service of a broad range of cultural and scientific institutions, at no extra cost for them. EKT is combining advanced technologies like Software as a Service (SaaS) and Cloud Computing with state-of-the-art business models, thus achieving economies of scale in the delivery of software services for the institutions.

SaaS services are offered at no extra cost, at institutions that produce and manage digital content such as museums, libraries, archives and, more broadly, at cultural institutions from all over Greece. They are aimed at enhancing the institutions’ online presence through the delivery of integrated solutions compliant with international standards that correspond to the principal requirements of the lifecycle of the digital content: safe storage, metadata development and mapping, organisation, management, delivery and re-use of the digital content. The project is being complemented with e-learning and e-ticketing services that ensure continuous support for the institutions.

Such an initiative that aims at enhancing the collaboration among recognised Greek cultural institutions, at setting a national best practice and at developing a sustainable environment for the management and delivery of authoritative digital content is of paramound national importance.

The services are implemented in the framework of the project “A Services Platform for the Deposit, Management and Delivery of Open Data and Digital Content” that is being funded through the Operational Program "Digital Convergence", NSFR (2007-2013).
