‘Historein’: EKT announces the journal’s new online edition

17/09/2012

The National Documentation Centre (EKT) announces the electronic edition of ‘Historein’, a significant peer reviewed journal in the world of history. Scientists, researchers and those who have an interest in history, its theory and historical writing, have now online access to more than 130 articles in the field.

The launch of Historein’s electronic edition marks a new era for the journal since from now on the publishing and editorial processes can be carried out online. The transition to an open-access journal was implemented by the National Documentation Centre (EKT) as part of the Centre’s e-publishing activities. EKT has provided the software for the management of the publishing process (Open Journal Systems) as well as expertise, guidance, valuable advice and support services.

Historein is a Greek English-language international, peer-reviewed, open-access electronic journal which has been published since 1999 by the Cultural and Intellectual History Society (Athens). It is both historical and interdisciplinary in its perspective. It is thus situated within a scholarly “free trade" zone that encourages the interaction between history, philosophy, social anthropology, sociology, gender and labour studies, epistemology, literary and cultural studies. Its main aim is to promote the study of themes and phenomena that cannot be approached solely from within one discipline. Historein strongly supports approaches that tend to erase the distance between theory and research by making self-reflection a vital element of historical scholarship at all levels and stages.

Besides ‘Historein’, the National Documentation Centre (EKT) is the electronic publisher of a variety of peer-reviewed and accredited scholarly journals, journals of established status and open access editions. E-publications at EKT are a result of strategic partnerships with editors, institutions and cultural bodies of established status.

Currently, EKT develops a fully integrated e-Publishing environment based on open software, integrates peak technologies and applies international standards at all levels –data organization, preservation and services–. The list of  EKT's e-Publications  is continually enriched to include new journal titles, e-books and conference e-Proceedings.

Aiming at the accumulation and preservation of Greek digital content in science, culture and education, EKT adheres to the principles of open access to ensure enhanced accessibility, exploitation and dissemination of the research results.

Nine more  journal titles have been published as a result of EKT’s e Publishing activities: the  Deltion of the Christian Archaeological Society, The Gleaner,  (published by the Greek Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies), Mnimon (Society for the Study of Modern Hellenism), Makedonika (Society for Macedonian Studies),  Byzantina Symmeikta (Institute for Byzantine Research), Tekmeria (Institute of Greek and Roman Antiquity), The Historical Review/La Revue Historique,Research Notebooks and Newsletter (Institute for Neohellenic Research). These journals are available at epset.gr (portal for the National Information System for Research and Technology), a rich digital resource which provides access to more than 4.5 million pages with e-publications, digital repositories, digital libraries and studies related to research indicators in Greece.Overall, users have access to the full text of more than 1.800.000 articles (Greek publications indexed at Directory of Open Access Journals, το ISI, το Scopus και το Google Scholar).

EKT’s e-publication activities are implemented within the Operational Programme "Digital Convergence" (NSFR) and the project "National Information System for Research & Technology/Social Networks-User Generated Content" (Project ID 296115) which is co-funded by Greece and the European Union-European Regional Development Fund.
